In 1999, Confessions was originally written for a piano and flute duet. It certainly resembles a conversation between the two instruments. With just the piano, however, you can still hear the dynamics and rhythm change back and forth between each statement. In the development section, the flute part would begin in a 6/8 meter and the piano would answer the same phrase in a 4/4 meter.
The whole meaning behind this song was a conflict I had in college trying to maintain a long distance relationship.
